Local Craft Brewery Stays Local to Celebrate 25th Anniversary with Launch of Spyhopper Honey Brown


Victoria, BC (April 1, 2009) - This year Vancouver Island Brewery is celebrating its 25th Anniversary of handcrafting 100% natural and great tasting craft beers on Vancouver Island. To commemorate this milestone and build on their tradition of crafting local beers for customers to enjoy, they have launched an exciting new beer Spyhopper Honey Brown.

Spyhopper Honey Brown is a light amber coloured ale that has a sweet malt flavour combined with an excellent balance of hop character. Spyhopper is handcrafted using caramel malts and a signature blend of Hallertauer and noble Saaz hops. This combination united with a delicate twist of wildflower honey from local Saanich honey producer Babes Honey Farm creates a beer with a mild hop impression, full body and honey sweet finish.

Babes Honey Farm was a perfect fit for Vancouver Island Brewery as the supplier for the honey needed for Spyhopper as their business philosophies were virtually identical. “We both are 100% Vancouver Island based and have a commitment to crafting pure, natural and unpasteurized products. Working together with neighboring business creates opportunities for the regional economy to reap the benefits,” states Mark Pitcher Owner of Babes Honey Farm.

Jim Dodds, new General Manager for Vancouver Island Brewery, echo’s this community sentiment, “for 25 years we have been a proud lsland based craft brewery who has always believed in purchasing local products, working with local based businesses and wherever possible contributing back to our local economy and community. We have grown from just 6 employees in 1984 to over 40 and all of our brewery employees are “Islanders” with true Island roots. We enjoy our connection with Vancouver Island and are proud of our commitment to doing our part to contribute to a long lasting and vibrant local economy and community.”

Spyhopper Honey Brown will be the first locally produced Honey Brown beer for this market and will be available in draught at many local pub and restaurants and in 6-pack bottles from retail outlets beginning in early April.
